CSS Peeper alternative: free, and what changes
Verbatim is the alternative that is free at full capability rather than free with features held back: a Chrome extension with thirteen tools, no account and no plan. CSS Peeper is a polished, well established inspector with a free tier and paid plans from 2.49 USD a month billed yearly, and its design-focused reading of a page is genuinely pleasant.
Where this comes from
We make Verbatim, so read this the way you would read any comparison written by one of the two parties. What we have done to make it useful anyway: every fact about CSS Peeper is quoted from their own site with the date it was read, nothing is claimed about how their product works internally because we have not read their code, and the section below says plainly when theirs is the better choice.

What CSS Peeper is good at
Presentation. CSS Peeper reads a page the way a designer thinks about it, and it has years of polish behind it. For looking at someone else's work and understanding the choices, it is a nice thing to use, and the free tier is enough for that.
Side by side
| CSS Peeper | Verbatim | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free tier, paid plans from 2.49 USD a month billed yearly | Free forever at full capability, no account |
| What is behind a plan | Some features, by tier | Nothing. The optional MCP server is a separate product |
| What you copy | Styles, assets and colours from a page | Every rule that matched, in cascade order, with the subtree and its inheritance |
| States and breakpoints | Not stated | Both, kept as rules and as media queries |
| Framework output | Not stated | React, Vue, Svelte, Astro or Angular |
| Verification | Not stated | The extraction is rendered back and diffed against the live element |
| Coding agents | Not stated | An MCP server with nine tools |
"Not stated" means their public site does not say, not that the product cannot do it. We have not tested their extension and will not guess at it.
When CSS Peeper is the better choice
- You want a designer-facing reading of a page rather than code to paste.
- You are happy on the free tier and it already does what you need.
- Its interface suits how you think, which is a real reason and not a small one.
When Verbatim is
- You want the output to be code you can build with, including framework components and Tailwind.
- You need the states, the breakpoints and the tokens, not a summary of the styles.
- You do not want capability behind a plan.
- You want a coding agent to read the page itself.
The actual difference, in one paragraph
Most tools in this category read getComputedStyle and present the result. That is a correct answer to a different question, because computation happens after the cascade resolves, and five things have already gone by then: the hover and focus states, the media queries, the @layer order that decided which rule won, the custom property names behind the values, and the fact that a shorthand was authored as a shorthand. Verbatim reads the rules instead, matched against the element and sorted the way the browser sorts them. The full explanation is here, with the specification references.
Questions
Is there a free CSS Peeper alternative?
Yes. The Verbatim Chrome extension is free forever with no account and no plan, and it covers copying CSS, components, Tailwind, design tokens, fonts, colours, assets, measurement and screenshots. The only paid part is an optional MCP server for coding agents, which is a separate download and a one time purchase.
How much does CSS Peeper cost?
Free tier with limited features. Pro from 2.49 USD a month billed yearly, Ultra from 4.99 USD a month billed yearly, at the time of writing. Checked on 16 September 2026 on csspeeper.com, and prices change, so confirm on their site before deciding.
What does Verbatim do that is actually different?
It resolves the cascade rather than reading the computed result. That is why the hover and focus rules, the media queries, the @layer order and the custom property names survive the copy, and why the output can be rebuilt rather than only read. It also renders the extraction back in an isolated frame and compares it with the live element, so a wrong copy is visible before you paste it.
Can I use both?
Yes, and plenty of people will. They are browser extensions and they do not conflict. If CSS Peeper already does what you need, the honest answer is to keep using it and add this only if the gaps above are gaps you actually have.
Does Verbatim work on pages behind a login?
Yes. It runs in your own browser in your own session on the page you are already looking at, so a dashboard, a checkout or an admin panel reads exactly like a public page.
